Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are a drug that weaken or paralyze muscle. In small doses, they can reduce skin wrinkles and help treat some medical conditions.

Commercial preparations of Botulinum toxin include:

    • onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox)
    • abobotulinumtoxin A (Dysport)
    • incobotulinumtoxin A (Xeomin)
    • rimabotulinumtoxin B (Myobloc)
    • prabotulinumtoxin A (Jeuveau)

The primary use of a Neurotoxin is cosmetic and acts by reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles. For cosmetic use:

    • the improvement appeared in 1–5 days
    • repeat treatments were necessary every 4–6 months
    • the person could return to work at once
The following are common areas where Botox can be used:

Area 1: The frown between your eyebrows is classed as Area 1.  This is the glabellar, and is what gives us a scowling or angry expression.  Neurotoxin is injected into the corrugator muscles to soften this frown.

Area 2: The horizontal frown lines in the forehead is Area 2. When we raise our eyebrows, in a surprised expression, these are the lines that can be reduced by Neurotoxins.  Injections are placed in the frontalis muscle in the middle section of the forehead.

Area 3: Crows feet to the sides of your eyes are referred to as the 3rd area.  Sometimes called laughter lines, their real name is lateral orbital lines. Neurotoxins injected here can dramatically reduce your crows feet.
